Placement Tests...

This whole placement test thing seems to be confusing people. Let me lay it out for you:

Here at Allegheny, courses are split up into three divisions: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences. Humanities classes are things like com arts, english, and philosophy. Social Sciences classes include econ, environmental studies, psych, poli sci and history. Natural Sciences are classes like math, chem, bio, nuero, and physics.

Every student has to major in one division, minor in another, and take 8 credits (2 classes) in the third division, with four of those credits coming in a course with a lab. That's the simple explanation. You could double major in two divisions then do 8 credits in the third without a minor. Bottom line: everyone at Allegheny will end up taking a course in the Natural Sciences. Some people choose to take Chem as their lab requirement. Others choose labs like Astronomy or Physics which are little more for non-science people (like myself) who break out into cold sweats at the thought of chemistry. It's possible to make it through 4 years at Allegheny without taking chem or math.

The placement tests are determining the highest level of chemistry, math and foreign language you could take. If you know for a fact that you want to take Chem, but don't want to take anything higher than Chem 110 (our lowest level), then don't take the test. If you took AP chem in high school or you're a real science whiz, take the test and see if you can skip to Chem 112. Even if you get into 112, you can still choose to take 110. All the same goes for math. If you don't ever want to take anything higher than pre-calc here, then don't take the test.

Either way, if you aren't going to take the tests, go onto WebAdvisor and opt out of them!
