When to move in

One of the most popular questions we start to hear around this time is, "Should my family and I stay overnight on Friday night before move-in? Where should we stay? When should we get to my residence hall in the morning?" Let me offer a few words of advice:

First of all, if you get to your residence hall at 8:45 am, you still won't be able to move in until 9. Sleep in a bit. Have a nice breakfast. Get to campus around 11 or 12. It will be a lot less stressful.

Second, If you would have to wake up earlier than 6 am to make it to campus by 3 pm (when move-in ends), you should probably think about coming up on Friday and staying in a hotel. If this is the case, make your reservations now! Most of the hotels, motels, B&Bs are booking up!

Finally, you'll be getting one more mailing from us that has more move-in tips as well as a map of the campus and different parking lots for different buildings. Go to your residence hall first! You'll get your room key, Orientation folder and schedule for the week, then a bunch of volunteers and peer leaders will help you unload your car. After that, you get your ID (as long as you've already submitted your picture!) in the Campus Center and fill out paperwork for financial aid and HR if you plan to work on campus.

Last words of wisdom: relax! Stop thinking so far ahead and enjoy your summer!

Is there an Allegheny specific list of stuff to bring? I'm finding that when you Google "what to bring to college" about 128 million people have about 128 million sites about what to bring. Although I appreciate the thorough approach the internet is taking to solve this little dilemma of mine, I think filtering through a million sites is impractical, borderline impossible!

Terrific question Corey. Here's what's recommended by past students:
Alarm clock
Cell phone charger
iPod charger
Comforter
Small amount of dishes (like 2 bowls, a few forks, spoons, etc.)
Flashlight
Laundry supplies (the washers and dryers are free but they don't give you detergent!)
School stuff (notebooks, pens, pencils, calculator, paper clips, stapler, scissors, folders/binder)
Backpack
Area rug
Pillow
Extra long twin sheets
Shower caddy
Shower stuff (shampoo, body wash, shaving stuff)
Shower shoes
Bath towel, hand towel, washcloth
Lamp
Thumbtacks
Scotch tape
Wastebasket
Storage bins for under the bed (like the rubbermaid ones) for your out of season clothes
One nice outfit (dress pants, shirt and tie)

Don't overpack clothes! You're going to end up wearing the same two pairs of jeans every day anyway and you'll get a bunch of free tshirts. Stick to this rule: if you haven't worn it in the past 6 months, you probably won't suddenly start wearing it in college!

How long should parents stay in town? or should they leave after the first day of orientation?

Posted by: Khrystine at July 25, 2008 08:11 PM

We have a parent program on Saturday night and most parents usually like to go to Matriculation to meet with your advisor at the time we have scheduled for them. It eases their minds a bit to know that you are officially a student at Allegheny and there will be professionals helping you get your classes!

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

The pain of making the necessary sacrifices always hurts more than you think it's going to. I know. It sucks. That being said, doing something seriously creative is one of the most amazing experiences one can have, in this or any other lifetime. If you can pull it off, it's worth it. Even if you don't end up pulling it off, you'll learn many incredible, magical, valuable things. It's NOT doing it when you know you full well you HAD the opportunity- that hurts FAR more than any failure.
