Spoken Word Artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph To Perform at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – June 18, 2008 – Acclaimed arts activist Marc Bamuthi Joseph will close the Consortium for Regional Empowerment through Educational Diversity's first Early College Summer Program session on Monday, June 23 at 7 p.m. in Montgomery Gymnasium with his nationally acclaimed spoken word presentation.

The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a dessert reception in the Campus Center.

While at Allegheny, Joseph will work with the students from the Cleveland School of the Arts for two sessions to discuss and demonstrate how they can use the arts for social change. Joseph is a National Poetry Slam champion, Broadway veteran, featured artist on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry on HBO, and a recipient of 2002 and 2004 National Performance Network Creation commissions.

He was also recently named a USA Rockefeller Fellow in Theater Arts. Joseph's performances have been praised in a number of venues including The New York Times, which described his work as “eloquent … seamless … and remarkable.” The Seattle Times named him their “cutting edge performer of the year” for 2003.
