MEADVILLE, Pa. – Feb. 20, 2008 – Andy Duncan will read from his work at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in Grounds for Change Coffeehouse on the second floor of the Campus Center at Allegheny College. The program, which is free and open to the public, is part of the college's Single Voice Reading Series.
Duncan is an award-winning American science fiction and fantasy writer whose work frequently deals with Southern themes. His fiction has appeared in various collections and anthologies, such as “2008 Fantasy: The Best of the Year,” “Wizards,” “Eclipse One” and numerous print and online journals, including Asimov's Science Fiction, Realms of Fantasy, Weird Tales and SciFiction.
Duncan has been nominated five times for the Nebula Award, three times for the World Fantasy Award and twice for the Hugo Award. Most recently, his story “Unique Chicken Goes In Reverse” has been named to the 2007 Preliminary Nebula Ballot. His novella “The Chief Designer” won the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award in 2002. His story “The Pottawatomie Giant” and his collection “Beluthahatchie and Other Stories” won World Fantasy Awards in 2001.
Other books include “Crossroads: Tales of the Southern Literary Fantastic,” an anthology co-edited with F. Brett Cox (Tor, 2004), and “Alabama Curiosities,” an offbeat travel guide (Globe Pequot, 2005).
A native of Batesburg, S.C., Duncan has a master's of art in creative writing from North Carolina State University and a master's of fine art in fiction from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He is a 1994 graduate of the Clarion West writers' workshop in Seattle. Duncan is also an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and the Horror Writers Association and a supporter of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
Duncan lives in Frostburg, Md., works as a senior editor for Overdrive magazine and teaches distance-learning courses in the Honors College of the University of Alabama.
