Book Signing Event To Follow Lecture
MEADVILLE, Pa. – April 13, 2009 – Environmentalist, activist and attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak on “Our Environmental Destiny” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15 in Shafer Auditorium at Allegheny College. The doors will open at 7 p.m.
Kennedy will discuss the role that our natural surroundings play in our work, our health and our identity as Americans. Using examples gathered from relevant art, history, litigation and literature, he will remind listeners of their responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
Kennedy is chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeepers, senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council and president of the Waterkeeper Alliance. A high-profile political speaker and activist, he has used numerous media outlets, including his 2004 book, “Crimes Against Nature,” to call into question the environmental policies of the United States.
Following the lecture, Kennedy will be available to autograph copies of his books in the college's Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries. The Merriman Bookstore, located on the second floor of the Allegheny College Campus Center, has five of Kennedy's books in stock: “The Riverkeepers,” “Crimes Against Nature,” “Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life of Joy,” “Robert Smalls: The Boat Thief,” and “Joshua Chamberlain and the American Civil War.”
The bookstore is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Mr. Kennedy's books will also be available for sale at a table in the Campus Center Lobby from 7 to 7:30 p.m., immediately prior to Mr. Kennedy's lecture.
Parking is available in the lot near the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts, at the corner of John Street and Highland Avenue, and in the lot behind Pelletier Library, which can be entered from the alley off of Sherman Street between North Main Street and Highland Avenue.
Kennedy's lecture is the final event of the public programming of Allegheny's Year of Health. Both the lecture and the book signing event are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Professor Caryl Waggett at caryl.waggett@allegheny.edu.
