MEADVILLE, Pa. – June 19, 2008 – The Week 2 Concert Band of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College will perform a free gala concert on Friday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the college's Shafer Auditorium.
Returning for a fourth season to conduct the concert band will be Retired Colonel Timothy Foley. Foley retired in July 2004 as the director of the U.S. Marine Band, known as “the President's Own,” in Washington, D.C. During his tenure as director, Foley served as music advisor to the White House and regularly conducted the band at the Executive Mansion. He recently served as a guest conductor for the U.S. Marine Band Chamber Orchestra.
Retired Second Leader of the U.S. Marine Band Lt. Col. Charles P. Erwin, who conducted the Band Camp from 1989 to 1993, will make an appearance as a guest conductor during the concert. Erwin was admitted as a member of the U.S. Marine Band directly out of high school. He began in the cornet section, became the first adjutant officer of the Marine Band and finally was appointed assistant leader of the band.
The concert will include a cornet trio of Leroy Anderson's “Buglers Holiday” performed by Erwin, James Seidel, of Reading, Pa., and Walter Bailey, of Charleston, S.C. Soloist Rob Roth, who teaches percussion at Allegheny, will perform George Hamilton's “Xylophonia.”
Among the composers represented are Camille De Nardis, Franz Lehar, John Philip Sousa, Franz van Suppe, Morton Gould and Karl King.
The 74 campers and 16 staff members participating in Band Camp have come to Meadville from 16 states and Australia. They spend a week at Allegheny College playing music and rehearsing for the concert.
