Princeton Review Names Allegheny as One of North America's Best Colleges

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Aug. 27, 2007— Allegheny College has once again been recognized as one of the top institutions in the country, this time in the newly released Princeton Review. The Review features Allegheny in “The Best 366 Colleges,” the 2008 edition of its annual best colleges guide.

Only about 18 percent of the four-year colleges in the United States and two Canadian colleges are in the book, which includes two-page profiles on the schools.

“We chose schools for this book primarily for their outstanding academics. We evaluated them based on institutional data we collect about the schools, feedback from students attending them, and our visits to schools over the years,” says Robert Franek, vice president for publishing at the Princeton Review. “We also consider the opinions of independent college counselors, students and parents we hear from and survey year-long.”

The college profiles in the guidebook include candid comments from students. One student quoted in Allegheny's profile notes the number of activities that are available to students. “Everyone is involved in a variety of activities,” the student says. “No one is just involved in religious life or just involved in Greek life. Therefore, it's not hard to fit in somewhere.”

Another student notes that the rigorous nature of Allegheny's academics “really prepares you for graduate school and taking many upper-level courses at one time.”

Allegheny students surveyed for the book revealed some common themes. In a “Survey Says…” sidebar, the Review lists statements that students were in most agreement about. Allegheny's list includes: “lab facilities are great,” “students are friendly” and “career services are great.”

“We're delighted to once again be featured in this guidebook,” says Scott Friedhoff, vice president of enrollment and communications at Allegheny College. “But we also like to remind students and parents that guidebooks can tell them only a small part of what they need to know about selecting a college. There's no substitute for talking with admissions officers and visiting a campus to find the college that fits a student's particular combination of interests, skills and talents.”

Allegheny College is featured in numerous national guidebooks including “Colleges That Change Lives,” “Peterson’s Competitive Colleges: 440 Colleges That Attract the Best and Brightest,” “Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College That Is Best for You” and “The Insider’s Guide to Colleges.”
