Middle East Film Series Begins with “Cease Fire”

Meadville, Pa. – September 3, 2008 – The Allegheny College Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies will present a 10-week Middle East film series Thursday, Sept. 11 through Thursday, Dec. 4.

“The Middle East film series is an outgrowth of Allegheny's larger commitment to expanding its offerings on the Middle East,” Dean of the College Linda DeMeritt explained. “To that end, in fact, this fall we are pleased to have hired Dr. Vika Gardner, a professor of philosophy and religious studies, who joins the faculty specifically to teach Islamic studies.”

The series' opening film, “Cease Fire” (Iran, 2006), is a romantic comedy about a spitfire professional and her love interest.

The remaining series schedule is as follows:
• Sept. 18 – “Baran”
• Sept. 25 – “A New Day in Old Sana'a”
• Oct. 2 – “Le Grand Voyage”
• Oct. 23 – “Man Push Cart”
• Oct. 30 – “Yossi and Jagger”
• Nov. 6 – “Osama”
• Nov. 13 – “The Closed Doors”
• Nov. 20 – “The Syrian Bride”
• Dec. 4 – “Under the Moonlight”

All of the films will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 212 of Carnegie Hall and are free and open to the public. Following each film, Gardner will facilitate an optional discussion. For more information, e-mail vika.gardner@allegheny.edu.
