Meredith LeVande To Present Multimedia Lecture “Women, Pop Music and Pornography”

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Feb. 23, 2009 – Nationally known singer and songwriter Meredith LeVande will present a multimedia lecture, “Women, Pop Music and Pornography,” on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Quigley Hall auditorium at Allegheny College.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, explains why images of women in popular music are hyper-sexualized. Through a comprehensive slideshow, LeVande will explore how the connection between media ownership deregulation and media companies that profit from adult entertainment has pushed pornographic imagery into the mainstream.

LeVande has lectured at colleges and universities across the United States, including Middlebury College, the University of Delaware and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

She has recorded two albums: “Through the Clouds,” which was licensed by the television show “Dawson's Creek,” and “Half Her,” which Starbucks Corp. added to its worldwide music programming. She is recording her third album and has released an album of original children's recordings.

LeVande graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.A. in English and women's studies, holds a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and earned a master's of music degree from the State University of New York, Purchase College.

LeVande's presentation is sponsored by the Allegheny College women's studies program. For more information on LeVande and the “Women, Pop Music and Pornography” lecture, visit www.meredithlevande.com.
