MEADVILLE, Pa. – Oct. 10, 2008 – James H. Mullen Jr. will be installed as the 21st president of Allegheny College on Friday, Oct. 17.
The installation ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium of the Henderson Campus Center and is open to the public. Because the academic procession will begin at 4:10 p.m., the audience should be seated by 4 p.m. Immediately following the ceremony, all are invited to the president's reception in the Campus Center lobby.
Mullen moved to the community this summer with his wife Mari and their two children, Franki and James. He took office on Aug. 1, succeeding Richard Cook, who retired on July 31.
Mullen has been a leader in higher education for 20 years. Before coming to Allegheny he served as president of Elms College in Chicopee, Mass.
At the University of North Carolina at Asheville, the designated liberal arts campus of the UNC system, Mullen's work as chancellor helped earn national attention for the university's academic program and statewide praise for its commitment to community. As senior vice president of Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn., Mullen was responsible for Trinity's comprehensive master plan. He also oversaw a nearly $300 million public/private partnership that revitalized the neighborhood surrounding Trinity's campus.
In addition to his leadership roles in college administration, Mullen was a sought-after lecturer in Trinity College's public policy department, where his work focused on the American presidency. He also held appointments as professor of history at Elms College and as professor of political science at UNC Asheville. At Allegheny College he also serves as a professor of political science.
Mullen is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. He holds a master of public policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, which recently honored him as one of 10 leading educators to receive the School of Education's Awards of Distinction.
SCHEDULE OF INAUGURATION ACTIVITIES
In addition to the installation ceremony and reception, a number of special programs have been planned to ensure that President Mullen's inauguration is a celebration of and for our community. These events are free and open to the public.
