MEADVILLE, Pa. — Feb. 20, 2009 — The first recipient of the O'Brien and Gere Ltd. Russell L. Sutphen Scholarship will be announced at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 in the East Alcove of Schultz Hall, which is located off North Main Street on the Allegheny College campus. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to Carnegie Hall.
Named for the chief engineer and chairman of the board at O'Brien and Gere from 1974 to 1989, the award will be presented to a rising junior geology major with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and with the promise of a successful career in environmental geology.
Following the award presentation, Allegheny College alumnus John Sutphen, class of '78, will facilitate a forum about career opportunities in the environmental industry. Sutphen is executive vice president, assistant secretary and general counsel of O'Brien and Gere, an engineering and project delivery firm headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y.
Cristina Jorge Schwarz, class of '02, and David Cass, class of '07, who are also with O'Brien and Gere, will join with Sutphen in the discussion.
