MEADVILLE, Pa. – July 3, 2007 –Twenty-four 10th and 11th graders from the Pittsburgh area will attend Allegheny College's Creek Camp in July. Founded last year with one session, the camp has expanded to two sessions this year, with 12 students attending each one.
The camps, which will run July 8-13 and July 15-20, give students hands-on experience studying biology and freshwater ecology in northwestern Pennsylvania's waterways,. They’ll be studying French Creek, one of the most biodiverse in Pennsylvania, as well as other streams in the watershed.
Grants from a number of corporations and foundations, including Bayer and R.K. Mellon, make the camp possible.
The camp is part of Creek Connections, a program through which Allegheny College students and faculty collaborate with regional schools in western Pennsylvania and New York, using the French Creek and Ohio River watersheds as outdoor laboratories for ongoing water quality investigations done by school children.
Founded in 1995, the project is now in its 12th year and has grown from five to more than 40 participating teachers at 34 middle and high schools.
