Community Dialogues Continue Through Core Commitments Program

Meadville, Pa. – Jan. 17, 2008 – Events throughout the spring semester at Allegheny College will continue the campus-community dialogues begun last year when Allegheny joined the Association of American Colleges and Universities' Core Commitments program.

The Core Commitments program explores how higher education can foster engaged citizenship, teach personal and social responsibility, encourage a respect for diversity, cultivate excellence and implement programs that support community engagement. Allegheny was one of only 28 schools nationwide invited to join the Core Commitments Leadership Consortium.

The series of campus-community dialogues will continue on Friday, Feb. 1 when Brian Hill, president of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, returns to campus. Hill, who graduated from Allegheny College in 1981, will meet with community leaders to facilitate the development of environmental principles to help guide local and regional planning. Because space for this session is limited, anyone interested in attending is asked to contact the college's Center for Economic and Environmental Development at 332-2713.

A second dialogue, on the subject of “Developing a Campus Honor Code of Conduct,” will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25 in the Campus Center lobby. The second dialogue is a response to community requests to address issues of conduct and civility on and off campus.

Allegheny's Core Commitments program is organized by the Civic Engagement Council, whose numerous programs are designed to promote civic engagement: the Center for Political Participation (CPP), the Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED), the Values, Ethics and Social Action (VESA) program, the Office of Community Service and Service-Learning, Community-Based Research (CBR) and Engagement Through Writing.
