MEADVILLE, Pa. – Aug. 17, 2007 –Allegheny College will unveil its “Healthy Children—Healthy Homes” project, which provides families with the resources to address childhood indoor environmental diseases, at the 2007 Crawford County Fair, August 18-25.
The project is part of the college's French Creek Environmental Health Initiative, which is directed by Caryl Waggett, assistant professor of environmental science at Allegheny. FCEHI is under the umbrella of the college’s Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED).
With the support of a Crawford Heritage Foundation grant, the “Healthy Children—Healthy Homes” project has developed a set of hands-on interactive activities and exhibits. Demonstrations will focus on the importance of maintaining a healthy home and provide easy and inexpensive ways to reduce the risk of preventable childhood indoor environmental diseases.
Demonstrations will also be made available at a Healthy Kids Day in fall 2007 at Allegheny College.
The “Healthy Children—Healthy Homes” project is an outgrowth of an existing FCEHI program called “Incidence and Risk Reduction of Childhood Lead Poisoning in Rural Low-Income Communities.” This program is supported by an EPA-funded grant to Allegheny College in partnership with Meadville Pediatrics, the Center for Family Services, Community Health Services and the Meadville Redevelopment Authority.
