MEADVILLE, Pa. – June 4, 2008 – The Week 1 Concert Band of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College will perform a free gala concert on Friday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the college's Shafer Auditorium.
Conducting the concert band will be Retired Colonel Jere W. Fridy, USAF. Fridy was the commander and conductor for many years of the 553 Air Force Band—also known as the Pennsylvania Air National Guard Band—stationed at Middletown, Pa. He is currently the assistant conductor of the Virginia Grand Military Band.
The concert will feature a solo by flutist LeAnne Wistrom, who will play Antonio Vivaldi's Piccolo Concerto in C Major RV443, and a duet by euphonium player Luke Spiros and tubist Earle Louder, who will play Paul Yoder's humorous arrangement of the aria “Largo al Factotum,” titled “Figaro in Stereo.”
“It's impossible to tell which of the 35 other selections in the band's folders will be in the concert,” said Band Camp founder John Fleming, “but the program will include a wonderful mix of overtures, transcriptions, original works for band, lighter numbers and marches.”
Among the composers represented are Franz von Suppe, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, Clifton Williams, Karl L. King and John Philip Sousa.
The 73 campers and 16 staff members participating in Band Camp have come to Meadville from 19 states and Canada. They spend a week at Allegheny College playing music and rehearsing for the concert.
