MEADVILLE, Pa. – Feb. 22, 2008 – March 1 is the deadline for applications for the 2008-2009 Allegheny College Association (ACA) Continuing Education Scholarships. Applications are available at the Meadville Public Library and the YWCA, as well as on the ACA web site: http://acascholar.allegheny.edu.
The program, now in its 34th year, enables community women to return to the classroom to pursue an undergraduate college degree. A tuition waiver contributed by Allegheny College allows each recipient to enroll in a maximum of 12 credits during the 2008-2009 academic year. A stipend is also provided each semester to help with costs such as books, child-care and travel. Funds for the stipend are raised through programs sponsored by ACA throughout the year.
In order to be eligible, a woman must be 25 or older, a resident of Crawford County at the time of application and have completed high school (or the equivalent). If applicants have additional education beyond high school, it cannot exceed the equivalent of two years of college.
Preference will be given to applicants who have realistic educational goals and the potential for academic success.
Individual interviews will be held in March, and the 2008-2009 scholarship recipients will be announced soon after. Because employees of Allegheny College are eligible for tuition remission under another program, they are not eligible for this scholarship.
Each scholarship winner will choose her courses in consultation with a faculty member who serves as her advisor. A support group including new and former students, faculty and administrators is available to help scholars learn more about college and campus life.
An information session will be held on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the East Alcove of Schultz Hall. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend to learn about beginning or returning to college, career goals, financial assistance, using their skills and abilities, what to expect on a college campus, and adjustments that older students are likely to face.
