Allegheny College Galleries to Host “8-Hour Projects” and Portrait Exhibit

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Aug. 21, 2007— The art galleries of Allegheny College will present “8-Hour Projects,” an exhibit with a live art component, in Bowman and Penelec Galleries and “Liz Roth: Portraits,” an exhibit of portrait paintings done on site in Megahan Gallery. The exhibits will be on display from Sept. 4 through Oct. 2.

“8-Hour Projects,” an annual event at Allegheny, will consist of artworks created in one day in the art gallery. As a special event in advance of the exhibit, the gallery will be open on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Artists are assigned a wall or floor space of approximately 10 x 10 feet on which to create their works. The public is encouraged to visit the gallery throughout the day and observe the artists in action.

Artists Dragana Crnjak, Brian Holderman and Mark Franchino will present informal talks about the process and imagery of the artwork they created for “8-Hour Projects.” These artists' talks will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in the art galleries. A reception will follow to celebrate the opening of both exhibits.

Also participating in the “8-Hour Projects” show are Joe Lupo, Stephanie Ashenfelder, Amos Scully, Amanda Besl, Matthew Kolodziej, Dan Mills, John Kissick, Jason Lahr, Jenifer Cooney and Gianna Commito.

“Liz Roth: Portraits” will feature portrait paintings done on site on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The exhibit will also include a video documenting the painting of the portraits.

Liz Roth is a widely exhibited artist who teaches at Oklahoma State University. Anyone wishing to volunteer for a portrait sitting is asked to call the gallery at 332-3383.

The presentation of these exhibits and lectures is supported in part by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Arts Council of Erie.

The exhibit and events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30 to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. The Art Galleries are located in Doane Hall of Art, which is connected to the Campus Center on the Allegheny College campus, just east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville.
