Allegheny Adds Sustainability Coordinator

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Oct. 23, 2008 – Allegheny College has hired Kelly Boulton to fill its newly created full-time position of sustainability coordinator.

Previously, Boulton worked with the French Creek Valley Conservancy. Prior to her work in Meadville, she was a manager with Angelic Organics, an organic agriculture company in Illinois, and worked with Greenthumb NYC creating rainwater catchment systems for community gardens. Boulton received a B.S. in environmental science from Allegheny in 2002.

“Allegheny has long been concerned about waste reduction, energy efficiency, sustainable building and environmental literacy,” said Dave McInally, vice president for finance and planning. “In fact, we have formalized our commitment to sustainability through college policy and signed commitments.

“In her work as sustainability coordinator, Kelly will support our efforts to coordinate and strengthen the numerous stewardship programs already in place and help us take advantage of new opportunities that surface in this quickly changing arena.”

In 2006 Allegheny College became a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. As part of that commitment, last month the college completed a baseline greenhouse gas inventory, which Boulton will use to develop a comprehensive action plan outlining in detail the steps necessary to achieve climate neutrality. As part of the Climate Commitment, Allegheny will submit its action plan to ACUPCC by September 2009.
