Departing G at Dusk from Susan Bowen's series |
MEADVILLE, Pa. – September 23, 2004 – The art galleries of Allegheny College will present Paxinos & vicinity: photographs by Robert Raczka and the annual Faculty & Alumni Exhibit. A public reception will be held in the galleries on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.
These exhibits will feature a variety of art works including drawings, sculpture, installation art, photographs, video art, and multimedia art works. They will be on display from Tuesday, Oct. 5 through Wednesday, Oct. 27. The art galleries will be closed for Fall Break Oct. 9-12.
Robert Raczka, professor of art and gallery director, will be featured in a one-person exhibition in Bowman Gallery. This exhibit, Paxinos & vicinity, will present a series of color photographs that he produced while on sabbatical last year. These photographs document and subjectively respond to the people and places of Pennsylvania that exist in the present while carrying traces of the past.
The Faculty & Alumni Exhibit will be displayed in Penelec and Megahan Galleries. This year's alumni invitee is Susan Bowen ‘74, who will show photographs from her series Iowa Meanderings. Bowen uses an inexpensive plastic camera, and her overlapping images are created by only partially advancing the film between exposures. Bowen grew up in Baltimore and studied art and photography at Allegheny College. Bowen then studied graphic and industrial design at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and Pratt Institute in New York City. Since 1981, she has lived in New York City, where she works as a computer programmer.
George Roland, professor of art, will present a selection of small drawings along with two multimedia artworks including Hidden Dialogue, a videotape of a dance performance incorporating video done in collaboration with Joan Meggitt and her Antaeus Dance Company. Sue Buck, associate professor of art, will present an installation combining photographs, a video projection of animated imagery, and household furnishings. Building upon scenes from Buck's daily life, the installation Drawn to Light will include images of moths as well as images of Christian figurines. David T. Collins, visiting assistant professor of art, will exhibit mixed media works that combine ceramic vessel forms and sculptural elements.
These exhibitions and events are free to the public. Gallery hours are: Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 2:00-4:00 p.m. The Art Galleries are located in Doane Hall of Art on the Allegheny College campus, North Main Street, Meadville. The Art Galleries are wheelchair accessible; gallery tours are available to groups by request. For more information, please call (814) 332-4365.
