The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations have awarded the College a grant of $200,000 to support renovations to Pelletier Library associated with the creation of the Learning Commons. The Learning Commons provides students with ready access to research, writing, oral presentation, tutorial, and technology assistance, as well as a social space where academic endeavors are advanced.
The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development has approved a grant of $27,100 for the College's Center for Political Participation. The grant will be used to begin the long-term development of a Voter Turnout Archive. A publicly available database on voter mobilization in the United States, the archive will feature up-to-date information, as well as data from elections after 1950. It will be accessible by academics, researchers, reporters, nonpartisan election organizations, and candidates.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded two grants to Allegheny College, totaling $500,000. One grant will promote faculty career enhancement through the creation of a pre-tenure leave program. The second grant will support initiatives designed to enhance the intellectual and cultural diversity of the student body, faculty and staff, and the curriculum.
Allegheny College, Edinboro University, Gannon University, and Mercyhurst College are collaborating on an AmeriCorps VISTA project, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This project partners twenty-nine VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) with social service agencies in Crawford and Erie counties that are dedicated to working with children and youth. The VISTAs placed at these agencies create new programs and improve the effectiveness of existing programs that use student volunteers to work one-on-one with the children and youth served by the agencies. The grant, in the amount of $54,213, constitutes 56 percent of the funding for training and supervising the VISTAs. In addition, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $485,446 in direct support to the VISTAs.
