The Trustees of the Richard King Mellon Foundation have approved a grant of $780,000 to Allegheny College. Of this total amount, $600,000 will support the Learning Commons, the centerpiece in re-structuring Pelletier Library to incorporate all the academic support services available on campus for both faculty and students. The Learning Commons is organized around three centers: the Reference and Communication Center, the Technology Support Center, and the Academic Support Center. The remaining $180,000 will provide support to Creek Connections, a collaboration between the College and public school districts in western Pennsylvania and New York. Creek Connections emphasizes a hands-on inquiry-based investigation of local waterways. Students strengthen quantitative skills and understand their connection to and impact on their waterways.
Alcoa Foundation has granted $15,000 to Allegheny College in support of the Creek Connections program. Creek Connections promotes regional watershed education by providing K–12 teachers with equipment and supplies, instructional modules, professional development, and college student liaisons, who assist with ongoing water investigations in their classes. Creek Connections reached more than 6,000 students in New York and western Pennsylvania last year.
Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Shaun Murphree has been awarded a $49,500 research grant from the Donors of the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund. Dr. Murphree's research project is "Sulfone-based Methodology for the Construction of Biologically Relevant Furans."
