If courage is indeed grace under pressure, then Nathan Smith '01 is a courageous young man. Playing in his first Masters with golfing legend Arnold Palmer, he had not only to attend to his own game but pay deference to the man who had inspired generations of golfers.
All golfers learn that etiquette is a part of the game. Bobby Jones, one of the founders of Augusta National Golf Club, once said, "In golf, customs of etiquette and decorum are just as important as rules governing play." As their threesome approached the green on every hole, I watched as Nathan Smith and Bob Estes slowed their steps to allow Mr. Palmer to reach the green first and receive the accolades that were his due. Then, and only then, did they proceed with their game.
