The Ultimate Walk

Will Cross '90 reached the South Pole on January 17, 2003, after a trek of some 60 days and 680 miles to raise funds and awareness for diabetes research. Cross not only became the first diabetic to reach the South Pole, but he also participated in ground-breaking research on the effects of extreme conditions on a diabetic's physiology-he was, in fact, a sort of Antarctic guinea pig. Cross was also making an important point through both this trek and an earlier one to the North Pole that he completed in 2001 as a training exercise. "Young diabetics should not feel restricted," he says. "With careful planning, they can do almost anything."
