Dear Students:
I have the pleasure of personally inviting you and your family to join in the celebrations surrounding Inauguration weekend, October 17 and 18. This weekend is about this wonderful community and the energy and vitality that you bring to it. Together we'll celebrate not only the College's traditions and rich, full history but also the dynamic future that all of us are building together.
We'll be joined by faculty, staff, alumni, delegates from other institutions, and guests from the community, with numerous opportunities to show our visitors just what it is that makes Allegheny a preeminent institution of the liberal arts.
Sharing it with you will make the weekend even more special to me. It would mean a great deal to me to see you at as many of these events as you can attend:
FACULTY EMERITUS LECTURES
Two distinguished professors emeriti of political science will present lectures in Campus Center 301/302 on Friday, October 17. Dr. Irwin Gertzog will speak on "Gender and the Selection of American Presidents" at 2 p.m., and Dr. Giles Wayland-Smith will speak on "Politics and Memory: Some Thoughts on National Political Narratives" at 2:45 p.m.
SUMMER RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM POSTERS
Student research will be showcased on the Campus Center balcony from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
INSTALLATION CEREMONY
The installation ceremony will be Friday, October 17 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium. All are invited to attend.
PRESIDENT'S RECEPTION
Following the installation ceremony, we'll hold a reception in the Campus Center lobby and balcony areas. The Summer Research Symposium posters will also be on display.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
This is your tradition and I thank you for inviting me to join you in observing it this year. We expect to have more than 700 Allegheny students and 700 Crawford County residents partner on Saturday morning, October 18, for Make a Difference Day. Roll up your sleeves: together we'll accomplish more than 125 cleaning, building, and repair projects in the local community. The MADD community luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information and to register, call the Community Service office at x5318 or visit the ACCEL website.
FARMERS MARKET
Farmers from the region will showcase their products in an open-air market from 2 to 4 p.m. in the new quad outside the Campus Center.
STUDENT CELEBRATION
Student leaders are planning a special celebration just for you on Saturday, October 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the quad outside the Campus Center.
More details about Inauguration weekend events are available at www.allegheny.edu/inauguration. It promises to be a fun weekend that showcases what is best about Allegheny: students and alumni, faculty and staff, all working together in one of the greatest traditions in the liberal arts.
