May 13, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Allegheny College senior second baseman Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season while freshman catcher Marci Potuzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) earned NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors as six different Allegheny Gators were named to the 2008 All-NCAC softball squad.

Bodenlos (pictured right) batted .405 with four homers and 14 RBI while stealing 22-of-24 bases in 2008. She also led the NCAC with 14 runs and 10 steals during league play. Potuzko (pictured below) batted .362 with two homeruns and finished second on the squad with 29 RBI.

In addition, junior shortstop Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwest) was named an All-NCAC First-Team selection for the second consecutive season after leading the Gators in both batting average (.449) and RBI (33).

The 2008 NCAC regular season champion Gators also had three players earn second team honors including sophomore infielder Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), sophomore utility player Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit County Day), and freshman pitcher Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex).

Maggie Bodenlos hit .390 on the year while batting a team-best .488 during NCAC play. Korotkin batted .359 during league play and led the Gators in homeruns (2) and RBI (15) against NCAC opponents. Downey was the Gators' top pitcher in 2008 and compiled an 18-7 record with a 3.39 ERA. She lowered her ERA to 3.02 in conference play and tallied a very fine 9-1 mark within the NCAC.

Allegheny (24-15) posted an 11-3 mark during the NCAC regular season prior to finishing third at the conference tournament. The Gators lose only two seniors to graduation and are expected to return 14 players in 2009.
