Apr 30, 2008 BOX SCORE
MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny baseball team (17-17) scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat La Roche (22-17) by a score of 7-6 in the team's 2008 finale on Wednesday. Senior Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) scored the game-winner in his final game as a Gator.
The Red Hawks threatened with runners at the corners and no out in the first, but starting pitcher Colt Viehdorfer (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) was able to work out of the jam with three fly-ball outs. However, La Roche put two more on to lead off the second and eventually scored three times in the inning.
The Hawks added another in the sixth before Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) got Allegheny on the board with a solo homer to dead center. Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor), Brian Schmidt (Utica, Pa./Franklin), and J.R. Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) then pulled the Gators to even with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles with two out.
The teams exchanged runs in the eighth before La Roche scored again in the ninth to make the score 6-5. Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) sent the game to extra innings with a homerun to left center in the ninth while Young doubled and scored on a throwing error in the 10th.
Young finished the game 3-for-4 to run his final season average to .419. Pereslucha and Obourn were each 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks.
On the mound, C.J. Knudsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) got the win after striking out the side in the 10th. Viehdorfer went the first five and allowed three earned runs while Aaron Skalko (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) tossed four innings with three strikeouts.
Wednesday’s homers brought Allegheny’s total to 33 on the season – the most by a Gator squad since 2003. Young, Pereslucha, and Herrnberger tied for the team lead with six apiece this spring.
