Gators Split Make-Up Doubleheader with Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio - The Allegheny baseball team (16-17, 8-8 NCAC) wrapped up conference competition with a doubleheader split against Hiram on Saturday. The Gators took the opener 16-6 behind a career-best 4-for-4, five RBI performance from Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) but fell by a score of 10-7 in the nightcap.

The doubleheader was a make-up from the rained-out twinbill on April 13.

Herrnberger homered twice in the fifth as the Gators broke open a 4-3 game with a 10-run scoring rally. Zach Skowvron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) also homered in a 2-for-4 effort while Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) was 3-for-3 with three RBI.

On the mound, David Strawser (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) allowed two earned runs over 5.2 innings to push his season mark to 3-1.

Game two was tied at five apiece after three innings but the Terriers scored five more times over the next three en route to handing the Gators the loss.

J.R. Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) homered for Allegheny while Andy Schleihauf (Connellsville, Ohio/Connellsville) was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) and Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) also drove in two runs apiece for the Blue and Gold.

Aaron Skalko (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) pitched four innings for Allegheny in the losing effort.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday, April 29 against Pitt-Bradford. The game will be played in Jamestown, N.Y. and is set for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
