Gators Win NCAC Title with Sweep of Wittenberg Apr 26, 2008 GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Allegheny softball team (23-13, 11-3 NCAC) clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament next weekend after sweeping Wittenberg (23-13, 7-7 NCAC) by scores of 4-0 and 5-3 on Saturday. Marci Potuzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) were each 2-for-4 in the opener while Katie Wills (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour) and Kristin Paul (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) picked up RBI. Freshman Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was lights-out for Allegheny, tossing a complete-game five-hitter with seven strikeouts. In game two, Allegheny broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth following a two-run double by Potuzko. Six Gators had at least two hits in the game as the team pounded out 14 base hits overall. Downey (17-6), pictured above, tossed her second complete-game of the day while striking out four Terriers. Allegheny, the defending NCAC Tournament champions, will now host the league's tournament on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
