PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For the second consecutive week, Allegheny College senior thrower Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) broke her own school record in the hammer throw, while competing against the top Division I throwers from throughout the country, at the 2008 Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
“The Penn Relays are known as the granddaddy of them all,” said Gator Head Coach Bill Ross. “The cream of the crop is here and it is amazing to see Liz finish this high and to put up another big PR. This throw puts her on a whole different level all together.”
Earley finished fifth in the event behind strictly Division I competition from schools such as Georgia Tech, LSU, Purdue, and Lafayette. Not only did her throw of 55.64m top her mark at IUP last week, it also gave her the furthest toss in all of Division III this season.
“Today’s meet was a great accomplishment for me,” said Earley. “Breaking 55 meters was a big goal of mine and it is very exciting to reach it at an event like this. With nationals a few weeks away, I hope this will serve as a good indicator of things to come.”
Earley, a three-time All-American, will next compete at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on May 1-2 in Delaware, Ohio. The NCAA Division III National Championships are several weeks later on May 22-24 in Oshkosh, Wisc.
