MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team (14-14, 7-7 NCAC) pushed its overall and conference records to .500 for the first time since mid-March with a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin (8-21, 3-9 NCAC) on Sunday. The Gators took the opener 6-2 then won by a score of 8-5 in the nightcap.
Oberlin scored first in game one after a Ben Kauder double and an RBI groundout by Jeremy Simon. The Gators answered in the third as Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) singled home J.R. Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) with two outs to make the score 1-1.
The Yeomen broke the tie with a run in the fifth and threatened to add more before Colt Viehdorfer (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) came on in relief to induce an inning-ending double play.
Allegheny came right back in the bottom of the inning as Young singled in another run and Zach Skovwron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) drove home two with a single to center.
The Gators added two insurance runs in the sixth as Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) doubled and scored following a Viehdorfer bunt-single in his first at-bat of the year. Hess drove in Viehdorfer with a single to center for the other Gator run.
Viehdorfer (pictured above) evened his record to 2-2 on the year after tossing 2.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts. Brad Cantrill allowed four earned runs over 4.1 innings in the loss for Oberlin.
Game two took on a similar storyline as the Gators fell behind 1-0 after an inning of play.
Pereslucha evened the score with an RBI single in the second before Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) and Young (pictured left) hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the third. Skovwron also singled in another run and scored later in the inning.
For the game, Skovwron was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Obourn hit a pair of RBI doubles. Andy Schleihauf was 2-for-3 with his third homerun of the year.
Oberlin made things interesting with four runs in the seventh following two Gator errors, but Justin Abbott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) was able to record the final three outs to preserve the victory.
Hess (3-1) started on the mound and threw six plus innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out seven batters.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, April 22 with a twin bill at PSU-Behrend. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
