Apr 19, 2008 BOX SCORE
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Allegheny lacrosse team (5-8, 3-2 NCAC) erased a 10-7 deficit midway through the second half with five straight goals on their way to a 13-12 victory at Wittenberg (5-6, 0-3 NCAC) on Saturday.
Allegheny's Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 26:09 mark of the first half. The two sides went back and forth for the rest of the period before Wittenberg scored twice in the final 1:39 with goals from Lizzie Amorello and Cait Mather to make the score 7-6 Tigers at the break.
Wittenberg then held the Gators to only one goal for the first 14:39 of the second half en route to building a 10-7 advantage. However, the Allegheny offense awakened to the tune of five goals over a six-minute span as Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy), Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), and Jensen Paterson (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) all scored during the rally.
Zanic scored again at the 4:58 mark and the Gators were able to hold off a late Tiger comeback-effort to score their third conference win of the year. The victory keeps the Blue and Gold in the hunt for one of the four NCAC Tournament spots and increases the importance of next Saturday's game against Kenyon.
Paterson (pictured above) led the Gators with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists while Hughes and Zanic each scored three times. Cailin Harvey (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) led the team with four ground balls while Kaitlin Biondi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Zanic each recorded three. Paterson tied for the game-high with five draw controls.
Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) picked up 10 saves in net for Allegheny while Bonnie Kenney grabbed eight for Wittenberg.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, April 22 with their home finale against St. Vicent. Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
