Gators Split Doubleheader with Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Allegheny baseball team (9-14) split a doubleheader with Westminster (14-10) on Wednesday. The Gators fell 4-3 in eight innings in the opener but bounced back to win 6-4 in the nightcap.
The Gators led the opener 3-0 in the sixth as Andy Schleihauf (Connellsville, Ohio/Connellsville), Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College), and Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) each drove in runs for the Blue and Gold.
Westminster came back with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh with two Gator errors leading to the scores. The Titans then scored the game-winner in the eighth as Dave Evans singled home Donnie Womeldorff.
David Strawser (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) pitched the first four innings for Allegheny and did not allow a run while surrendering only one hit and striking out three. Justin Abbott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton La-Salle) tossed 1.2 innings in relief while suffering his first loss of the year.
Trailing 1-0 in game two, Allegheny struck for four runs in the fourth as Schleihauf and Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) each hit two-run doubles. The Titans came right back with three in the fifth as Womeldorff hit a three-run homer down the right field line.
The Gators were able to answer with two runs in the sixth as J.R. Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Matt Barclay (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), pictured above, hit back-to-back RBI singles with two out.
Colt Viehdorfer (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs while picking up his first win of the year. Obourn tossed the final two innings and did not allow a run in recording his first career save.
Allegheny is right back at it tomorrow against Clarion at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. First pitch is set for noon (EST).
