Gators Sweep Hiram for Sanford's 100th Win

HIRAM, Ohio - Allegheny softball Head Coach Sandra Sanford picked up her 99th and 100th career victories on Wednesday as the Gators (18-12, 8-2 NCAC) swept a doubleheader with Hiram (8-14, 2-4 NCAC) at Mrytis E. Herndon Field. The Gators took the opener by a score of 6-1 then rallied in their final at-bat to win game two 8-7.

The Gators went ahead 2-0 in the opener after an RBI double by Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwest) and an RBI single by Marci Potuzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area).

Allegheny added to the lead with four runs in the sixth as Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) connected on a three-run homer and Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled home her sister Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy).

Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) went the distance and allowed seven hits while picking up her 12th victory of the season.

Alati Gagne tossed the first 3.1 innings for Hiram in the losing effort while Whitney Dropsey and Kelly Langland were each 2-for-3 at the plate.

Allegheny fell behind 4-0 in game two as the Terriers scored once in the first and three times in the second. The Gators were able to rally for six in their half of the third as Ryan and Maggie Bodenlos each drove in two runs.

After another Gator run in the fourth, Hiram answered with one in their half of the inning and two more in the seventh to tie the game. Allegheny quickly responded with the eventual game-winning run in the eighth as Liz Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) singled home Downey, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Downey (pictured above) tossed another seven innings in relief to move her record to 13-6 for the Gators while Jamie Brown (4-1) suffered her first loss of the year for Hiram.

At the plate, Burr finished the contest 3-for-5 with two RBI while Maggie Bodenlos, Ryan, Katie Wills (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour) and Kristin Paul (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) each collected two hits.

The Gators return to action on Saturday, April 19 with a conference twin bill against Denison set to start at 1:00 p.m. Allegheny will honor seniors Abby Bodenlos and Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) as part of the day’s festivities.
