Allegheny Falls Short Against Wooster
Apr 15, 2008 BOX SCORE
MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny lacrosse team (4-8, 2-2 NCAC) trailed conference-leading Wooster (8-3, 4-0 NCAC) by just one goal with 19:54 left in Tuesday's game, but a 5-0 run by the Scots late in the contest ended the Gator upset bid by a score of 14-10.
Wooster scored the game’s first four goals as Hillary Darragh found the back of the net twice during the opening run. Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) got the Gators on the board at the 16:29 mark before Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Jensen Paterson (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) scored back-to-back goals in the 18th minute to bring the score to 5-3. The Scots would add one more goal with just :17 left on the clock to take a 7-3 lead into the break.
After another Wooster goal to open the half, the Gators made things very interesting with a 3-0 run as Hughes, Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy), and Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland) each scored to make the score 7-6. However, a 5-0 run by Wooster over the next 12 minutes was too much for Allegheny to overcome.
Hughes led the Gators with five points on two goals and three assists while Paterson scored three times. Kaitlin Biondi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster), Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), and Erin Foster (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) each picked up two ground balls. Murphy (pictured above), Paterson, and Cailin Harvey (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) won two draw controls apiece while Murphy caused two turnovers.
For Wooster, Carly Carey tied for the game-lead with five points on three goals and two assists. Taryn Higgins picked up three ground balls while winning three draw controls along with Hillary Darragh.
Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded 10 saves in goal for the Gators and also picked up a team-high three ground balls. Jamie Dannenberg totaled eight saves in net for Wooster.
Allegheny returns to action on Saturday, April 19 at Wittenberg. The game is set for a 10:30 a.m. start time.
