Gator Offense Erupts in Sweep of Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio - The Allegheny baseball team (8-13, 3-7 NCAC) pounded out 38 runs on 34 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Hiram (6-13, 2-6 NCAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Gators won 19-6 in the opener then matched their run total with a 19-3 win in game two.

In game one, the Gators scored seven times in the third with Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) and Andy Schleihauf (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) each hitting two-run homers.

Allegheny followed with five more in the fourth as James Fago (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) had the big hit with a two-out, two-run single. After a Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) homer in the fifth, the Gators struck for six runs in the seventh inning. Schleihauf singled in two more while Fago connected for a two-run long ball.

J.R. Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) bumped his record to 2-1 on the year after pitching the first four innings with three strikeouts. C.J. Knudsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Matt Dishong (Venetia, Pa./Ringgold) combined to pitch the final three without allowing an earned run.

Herrnberger (pictured above) finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI while Charlie Fine (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Schleihauf had two hits on the day and drove in a career-best five runs.

Leading 2-1 in game two, the Gators broke out for sixth in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth, and six more in the seventh.

Hess was a career-best 4-for-5 with a homerun and five RBI. Young was 3-for-4 with his team-leading sixth homer of the year while Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) was 2-for-2 with two walks and a school-record tying five runs. Freshman catcher Isaac Marx (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also went deep for the first time in his career.

Aaron Skalko (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) tossed six innings while allowing two earned runs to get the win while Fago pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.

Weather permitting; the Gators and Terriers are scheduled for another doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
