Gators and Lords Split Sunday Doubleheader

Apr 6, 2008

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny baseball team (5-13, 1-7 NCAC) closed out the weekend by splitting a doubleheader with Kenyon (15-10, 6-6 NCAC) at McCloskey Field on Sunday. The Gators took game one 9-3 after a nine-run fourth inning but fell behind early in game two en route to losing 7-5.

Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) opened the Allegheny scoring with a three-run homer to center in the fourth. The Gators would score six more times in the inning as Charlie Fine (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) drove in two with a single and Matt Barclay (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and Brian Schmidt (Utica, Pa./Franklin) each drove in runs with two out.

The nine runs was more than enough for Gator starter Aaron Skalko (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), pictured right. The junior pitched a complete game, allowed only two earned runs on five hits, and struck out five without surrendering a walk.

Game two was a different story as Kenyon scored five times in the first inning. Sam Loesche had the big hit in the inning with a two-out, two-run single to right.

Allegheny chipped away with two in the third after RBI singles by Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) and Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four, Pa./Canon McMillan), but Kenyon quickly answered with two in their half of the inning.

Trailing by four, the Gators made things very interesting as Young and Zach Skovwron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) hit back-to-back homers to lead off the seventh. However, the next three Allegheny batters were retired in order as the game ended 7-5.

Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) started but only lasted an inning in the losing effort while Geoff Bollier pitched two perfect innings in relief to get the win for the Lords.

Next on the Allegheny schedule is a home doubleheader with Point Park set for 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
