Place Lands Qualifying Mark at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Allegheny men's track and field team placed ninth out of 14 squads competing at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational on Saturday. Senior Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) led the Gators with an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying-mark in the 1500m run.

The Gators totaled 36.50 points with an abbreviated squad while Carnegie Mellon took first overall with 144 points. Penn State Behrend (126), Wheeling Jesuit (77), Seton Hill (54.50), and Washington & Jefferson (54) rounded out the top five.

Place outlasted a field of 48 runners to place first with a time of 3:53.30, well below the provisional mark of 3:55.80 and less than three seconds away from the automatic mark of 3:50.60.

Senior Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) also turned in a first-place finish by ousting a field of 39 throwers in the shot put with a distance of 47-04.25.

Also for Allegheny, Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) placed third in the pole vault (13-05.75) while Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer City) finished fourth in the 110m hurdles (16.01), seventh in the long jump (20-03.75), and eighth in the 400m hurdles (58.36).

The Gators will split squads next week at the Bucknell Distance Carnival on Friday, April 11 and the Slippery Rock Invite on Saturday, April 12.
