April 5, 2008
GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
GAMBIER, Ohio - The Allegheny softball team (12-8, 4-0 NCAC) ran their current win-streak to six games after sweeping conference foe Kenyon (7-11, 1-3 NCAC) in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon. The Gators won 2-0 behind freshman pitcher Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) in game one then took game two by a score of 6-2.
Game one didn’t see much offense as the Gators scored the game’s only runs in the first and fifth innings. Marci Potuzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) brought home Liz Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) for Allegheny’s first run while Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled home Katie Wills (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour) for some insurance in the fifth.
On the mound, Downey improved her record to 8-4 with her third career shutout as she allowed only four hits and one walk. The Gator defense was solid, recording 20 of the 21 outs in the game without an error as only one Kenyon batter was retired on strikes.
Brittany Vanegas (2-5) also pitched well for Kenyon but was dealt the loss.
Leading 2-0 in game two, the Gators went ahead 4-0 in the fifth after a Potuzko RBI double to center and a sac-fly by Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
Kenyon rallied to tie the score after crossing the plate twice in both the fifth and sixth innings. Sara Sullivan highlighted the comeback with a two-run double in the fifth.
However, Allegheny would not be denied the sweep and scored twice in the final inning after an RBI triple by Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) and another sac-fly by Maggie Bodenlos.
Downey pitched 2.1 innings in relief to earn her ninth victory of the season while Vanegas (2-6) was once again handed the loss for the Ladies.
Four Gators finished the game with at least two hits while Maggie Bodenlos drove in a game-high three runs. Potuzko, pictured above, finished the contest with three base-hits.
Before returning to home to Meadville, the Gators make a stop in Cleveland, Ohio to play Case Western Reserve tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
