Gators Split Twinbill With Pioneers

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Allegheny baseball team (3-9) got back into action on Sunday and split a doubleheader with Marietta College (7-11). The Pioneers won game one 9-4 but the Gators rebounded to pick up a 4-2 victory in game two. Junior outfielder Zach Skowvron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) highlighted the day by going 3-for-5 with a homerun and four RBI.

The Pioneers jumped out with three runs in both the first and second innings to counter a pair of Gator runs in the second. Allegheny trimmed the lead to 6-3 with a run in the fourth but Marietta responded with another three-spot in the fifth to secure the win.

Andy Schleihauf (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsvile) went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI for the Gators while Skovwron was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) started an took the loss for the Gators while Nate Eschbaugh went the first four innings in a winning effort for Marietta.

In game two, Skovwron broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer to left center in the top of the second inning. The junior then added an RBI single in his next at-bat during the fourth inning, providing Allegheny with a much-needed insurance run.

John Hess (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) pitched the first five innings for Allegheny, allowing two earned runs and striking out five, while Mike Pereslucha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski) closed out the Pioneers in the sixth and seventh for his first career save.

Allegheny next travels to Thiel on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
