Korotkin Throws 23rd No-Hitter in Allegheny History

Mar 30, 2008

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Sophomore Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) tossed the 23rd no-hitter in Allegheny softball history on Sunday as the Gators (8-8) swept Thiel (4-7) in doubleheader action. Allegheny won game one by a score of 1-0 behind a shutout from freshman Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and took game two 4-0 behind Korotkin's masterpiece.

In the opener, the Gators scored the game’s only run in the third inning when Liz Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) hit a sacrifice-fly to center, scoring Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk).

Thiel threatened in the top of the sixth with runners at the corners and one out, but the Gators were able to get out of the jam as catcher Marci Potuzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), second baseman Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Acad.), and third baseman Rebecca Burns (Rogersville, Pa./West Greene) combined to foil a Tomcat double-steal attempt.

Allegheny used a two-out rally to get on the board in game two. Burr, pictured left, singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on a double down the left field line by Potuzko. Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) then knocked a single up the middle to plate Potuzko, making the score 2-0 in the third.

The Gators added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, which were more than enough for Korotkin (2-4), who struck out six over her seven innings of work.

The last Gator no-hitter came in the 2006 season by Giannina Coccaro while Korotkin's is only the four by an Allegheny pitcher in the last 12 seasons.

Back at .500 for the year, Allegheny next hosts Oberlin on Tuesday, April 1 in the Gators’ first conference matchup of the season.
