Gators End Spring Trip With a Split

KISSIMME, Fla. - The Allegheny softball team (6-6) ended its 2008 spring trip by falling to Rowan (12-2) 5-4 and defeating Otterbein 2-1 (0-3) on Friday.

Against Rowan, the Gators led 2-1 after an RBI double by Abbby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) in the top of the second inning. With the game tied at two, Allegheny went ahead when Marci Putzko (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) singled in two runs with two out in the fifth. However, Rowan would answer with two runs of their own in the sixth and eventually scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

Putzko finished the game with three RBI while Bodenlos scored twice. Pitcher Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) went the distance in the losing effort.

Against Otterbein, the Gators scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth after RBI hits from Korotkin and Katie Wills (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour). Freshman Amanda Downey (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) took a perfect game into the seventh before eventually giving up the lone Otterbein run.

For the game, Downey (5-2) allowed only two hits and struck out five without surrendering a walk.

The Gators next compete on Wednesday, March 26 against Mount Union. First pitch from Meadville, Pa. is set for 3:30 p.m.
