GAME 1 BOX SCORE | GAME 2 BOX SCORE

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Allegheny baseball team (2-6, 0-2 NCAC) dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader against #2 nationally-ranked Wooster (14-1, 2-0 NCAC) on Thursday. The Scots ran away with game one 14-4 and edged the Gators 4-1 in the nightcap despite a solid performance on the mound by Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) and Allegheny out-hitting the Black and Gold 13-8.

In the opener, Wooster sent 11 men to the plate in the first, scoring six times, then followed with a four-run second inning. The Gators were only able to counter with a single run in that span when Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) drove home Brian Schmidt (Utica, Pa./Franklin), who led off the first inning with a triple.

Colt Viehdorfer (Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch) started and suffered the loss while David Strawser (Tipp Center, Ohio/Tippecanoe) pitched effectively in long relief, tossing 3.2 innings with no earned runs and five strikeouts.

Anthony Trapuzzano (3-0) went the distance for Wooster and picked up the win, allowing three earned runs and fanning six. At the plate, Sean Karpen was 4-for-4 with four RBI.

In game two, the Scots scored once in the first after stringing together three consecutive “bloop” singles with two out.

Wooster threatened to add to its advantage in the second, but was turned away when Gator left fielder Zach Skowvron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) threw a potential second run out at the plate. However, another Scot threat in the third produced two runs to make the score 3-0.

Allegheny got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back doubles from Charlie Fine (Coral Springs, Fla./Charter) and James Fago (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), bringing the Gator deficit to 3-1.

Over the next two innings, the Gators had several chances to cut into the lead, but twice left the bases loaded. Wooster added an insurance run in the seventh.

Overall, the Gators left 12 runners on base and were 0-for-4 with the bases loaded.

Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) battled through six innings, surrendering seven hits and striking out five.

Matt Barnes (2-1) pitched the first five to get the win for the Scots while Mark Miller went the final two for his fifth save.

The two teams are right back at it tomorrow with doubleheader action set to begin at 11:30 a.m. The two games will wrap up Allegheny’s spring trip as the team heads back to Meadville on Saturday.
