Mar 18, 2008

BOX SCORE

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Allegheny baseball team (2-4) turned in its best all-around performance of the young season with a 14-3 victory over Gordon College (0-2) on Tuesday afternoon. The Gators hit three homeruns in the contest while sophomore Matt Dishong (Venetia, Pa./Ringgold) pitched five innings of shutout baseball in the win.

Allegheny wasted little time in getting the offense going, scoring three times in the first with a Charlie Fine (Coral Springs, Fla./Charter) two-out, two-run single to left highlighting the inning.

The Gators added to their lead in the third after a two-run single by Zach Skowvron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) and a two-run homer to left by Andy Schleihauf (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville), making the score 7-0.

James Fago (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) added his second homerun of the year in the sixth, while Matt Young (State College, Pa./State College) hit a three-run shot, his second, in the seventh.

Through six games this season, Allegheny has 12 homeruns as a team – the squad hit 19 in 37 games last year.

Dishong (Venetia, Pa./Ringgold) turned in the best performance of his young career, tossing five shutout innings and allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out five. C.J. Knudsen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Justin Abbott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) also pitched effectively in relief.

The Gators enjoy the next day off before returning to action against #2-ranked (d3baseball.com) Wooster on Thursday. The squads open a four-game conference series with doubleheader action scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday.
