Gator Bats Quiet in Loss to Heidelberg

Mar 17, 2008

BOX SCORE

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A three-run first inning for Heidelberg (9-2) was too much for the Allegheny baseball team (1-4) to overcome on Monday, as the Gators fell by a score of 4-1 in game five of the team’s spring trip in Florida.

Heidelberg scored three times in the first inning as Jeremy Wentworth and Matt Grassley each recorded RBI base-hits. Gator starter Aaron Skalko (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) settled down from that point, not allowing a run over his next six innings. In the losing effort, he surrendered eight hits, two earned runs, and only one walk.

Allegheny was able to get on the board in the top of the seventh, when Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) doubled home Brian Scmidt (Utica, Pa./Franklin), but could get no closer as “the Berg” added an insurance run in the eighth to make the score 4-1.

Brian Koehl started for Heidelberg and tossed six innings of dominant baseball, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out 10.

At the plate for the Gators, Zach Skowvron (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) was 2–for-3 while Alex Herrnberger (Eight Four, Pa./Canon McMillan) walked three times.

The Gators return to action late tomorrow morning (11 a.m.) against Gordon.
