Earley Takes Third at NCAA Nationals
Mar 14, 2008 WEIGHT THROW RESULTS
ADA, Ohio – Allegheny College senior Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added yet another All-American award to her trophy case, as she placed third overall in the 20-pound weight throw field, setting a new school record in the process.
The All-American honor is Earley’s third overall, as she placed fifth at last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships in the same event, while taking fourth in the hammer throw a season ago during outdoor.
Early became just the third woman in school history to place inside of the top three overall at the indoor track & field national meet, joining Chris Dudek, who placed third in the 1,500 in 1988 and Kari Bonomo who took second in the high jump in 1995.
The senior started the meet with a pair of fouls in her opening two throws. Needing a big throw to advance to finals, Earley busted out a school-record toss of 16.99 meters (55-feet, 9 inches), giving her the third furthest throw in her preliminary heat, and third place overall.
Once in the finals, Earley had throws of 16.62 (54-6.26), 16.67 (54-8.25) and 16.41 (53-10), but it was not enough to supplant her school-record heave.
Carol Comp of the University of St. Thomas won the event with a throw of 56-10.25, with SUNY-Fredonia’s Julia Hopson taking second with a toss of 56-3.75.
Overall her throw of 16.99 meters was the fourth furthest thrown in the competition, with only Comp’s winning throw and Hopson’s first two tosses going further.
With the six points earned by Earley, Allegheny currently sits in third place overall in the team standings.
The Gators have their final indoor track & field competitor, Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic), set to compete in the triple jump starting at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
