Gators Fall in Season Opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Allegheny College lacrosse team dropped the opening contest of the 2008 season by a score of 16-3 to Buffalo State on Tuesday evening.

Buffalo State grabbed a quick 3-0 lead as Shantel Ackley scored twice in the first two and a half minutes of the game. The Gators got on the board when Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored on a free position shot at the 24:53 mark of the first half, but saw the Bengals score eight more times in the period to counter an Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) goal that came with 17:39 left before the break.

Zanic scored twice in the contest for Allegheny while Elissa Gordon (Portland, Maine/Deering) picked up a team-high three ground balls. Leslie Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) went the distance in net for the Gators and recorded nine saves.

Ackley led the Bengals with two goals and two assists while Ashley Parker totaled five ground balls.

As a team, the Gators were outshot 31-13 and turned it over 31 times compared to 27 for Buffalo State.

Allegheny will look to get into the win column on Thursday at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
