Gators Fall in Rain Shortened Finale
March 10, 2008
SALISBURY, Md. – The Allegheny College softball team dropped to 0-3 on the season after a rain-shortened 3-1 loss to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (6-2) on Saturday afternoon. The game ended with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the remainder of the tournament being washed out with the weather.
The Gators reached the scoreboard first in the opening frame when Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy) was hit by a pitch before advancing to second on an error by the shortstop. Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) followed with a single to left field, driving in the sophomore outfielder.
Virginia Wesleyan rallied with one run in the second, third and fourth innings, respectively. The first run came when Allison Cockrell singled in Bree Strain in the second inning, the second on a Kristin Mundie solo home run in the third. The game’s final tally came in the fourth inning when Cockrell singled in Maree Opland, who had reached via an error.
Allegheny threatened for another run in the third inning, when Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shadyside Academy), the elder of the two Bodenlos’, walked and then stole second base, her second stolen base of the season and 59th of her career. She was moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), but was left stranded after a popup, a walk and a groundout.
The Gators were led by Ryan, who was 1-for-1 on the day, increasing her team-leading batting average to .667 on the year while Abby Bodenlos picked up the team’s other base knock. Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) picked up the loss, dropping her record to 0-1 on the season, pitching four and a third inning of work, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs and a solitary walk.
The Gators look to rebound in a week, as they take part in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Their first day at the week-long tournament will feature games against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Bridgewater State University,
