Place, Tupta Lead Gators at NCAC's

Feb 29, 2008

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators picked up a pair of first place finishes en route to a 33-point first day at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, including a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark from senior Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake).

The Gators’ 33 points lead the way, ahead of a tight battle for second place with Wooster (18), Ohio Wesleyan (17), Earlham (14), Denison (12), Oberlin (12), Wittenberg (6) and Kenyon (5).

The men did not get the start they wanted in the meet, as the duo of Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) and Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) took fifth and ninth overall. Yurky’s distance of 43-3.0 was a season-best for the junior, while McMahon, who is recovering from an injury suffered last week, leaped to a distance of 41-7.0, eight inches from the eighth place finisher. With the four points earned from Yurky’s finish, the Gators end the first event in fourth place, behind Wooster’s 14, Ohio Wesleyan’s 13 and Wittenberg’s six points.

The Gators made short memory of the triple jump, as senior Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) took first place in the shot put with a toss of 47-10.5, his second best throw of the season, in earning the Gators 10 points. The points put Allegheny in a three-way tie for second place with Earlham and Ohio Wesleyan, each with 14 points, with the College of Wooster leading the way with 18 points.

In the 5,000, the Gators scored four runners inside of the top eight, scoring 19 points in the event and giving the Blue and Gold a comfortable 15-point lead after the first day of competition. Place paved the way for the team with a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14:45.60, a new career best for the senior, with freshman Zac Ross (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) taking third in a time of 15:14.17. Aside from the top two, the Gators used a pack-running approach, and it paid out dividends for the team, with Ryan Hanson (Presto, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Jakeb Zimmerman (Leechburg, Pa./The Kiski School) placing seventh and eighth overall, and saw Tom Lee (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) just miss out on a scoring position, taking 10th overall. The 19 points pushed the Gators to 33 first-day points, 15 ahead of Wooster and 16 ahead of Ohio Wesleyan.

The Gators will look to earn their sixth consecutive NCAC title in the league championship’s final day, starting with the men’s pole vault at 10:30 a.m.
