Feb 20, 2008

BOX SCORE

MEADVILLE, Pa. - A 24-point lead after one half of play led the Allegheny women's basketball team (10-14, 7-8 NCAC) to a 60-47 win over Wooster (6-18, 3-12 NCAC) on Wednesday evening. Four Gators scored in double-figures with Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Jill Gregory (Jeanette, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) each totaling 12 in the win.

Allegheny got out of the gate with a quick 8-0 run after field goals from four different Gators, with Wolf connecting on the last at the 17:33 mark. Wooster was able to trim the Allegheny advantage to six points, at 11-5, but saw the Blue and Gold open things up with a 12-2 run ending in an Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) free throw to make the score 23-7 with 8:04 left in the half.

The Gator lead reached as many as 25 in the first period when Gregory scored on a layup with 47 seconds left before the break. The Fighting Scots were only able to trim one off of their deficit as the game went into intermission with a 39-15 Allegheny advantage.

Wooster made things interesting in the second half, opening the period on a 16-2 run culminating in a Kaitlin Krister jumper with 14:26 left to play. The Gators briefly rebuilt their advantage to 12, at 45-33, before the Scots got to within six, at 45-39, after a 6-0 run with 9:28 left on the clock.

Allegheny answered with three straight points after a Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) free throw and a Britni Mohney (Ford City, Pa./Ford City) layup to go ahead by nine, at 48-39. Wooster was unable to get any closer than seven the rest of the way as the Gators ended the game on a 6-0 run following a layup by Simone and four free throws from Magnelli.

Gregory and Wolf each scored 12 to lead the Gators while Wolf added a game-high tying eight rebounds. Simone and Magnelli scored 11 and 10, respectively, while Mohney paced the squad with four assists.

The Scots were led by Krister’s game-high 15 points with Becca Hartsock totaling eight rebounds.

The Gators were outshot .422 to .407 but did hold a 33-31 edge on the boards. Allegheny also won the turnover battle with 18 giveaways compared to 24 for the Scots.

Allegheny plays its final regular season game at Denison on Saturday, February 23 with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. That game combined with other NCAC action over the weekend will determine where the Gators play in the first round of the conference tournament, set to start on Tuesday, February 26.
