CANTON, Ohio – The Allegheny College women took fourth place overall and the men sixth at the 2008 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships hosted at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. Senior diver Jayson Loeffert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) brought home NCAC Diver of the Year honors after his first-place finish on the three-meter diving board and a second-place finish on the one-meter board.

On the women’s side, the Gators fell just short of third-place Wooster, 835.5-to-886.5. Kenyon won by just 15 points over Denison, 1,630-to-1,615, with Oberlin (659), Wittenberg (624), Ohio Wesleyan (555) and Hiram (489) rounding out the teams in the field.

The Gator men totaled 477 points, directly ahead of Hiram College (432). Kenyon picked up the team title with 1,633 points, 35 points ahead of second-place Denison University. Wabash took third with 1,066 points, as Wittenberg (768) and Wooster (740) rounded out the top five. Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin rounded out the teams in the field with 405 and 327 points, each.

Arielle Conti (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) started off the scoring portions of the final day by taking fifth in the 1,650 freestyle, scoring 25 points for the Gators, with Emily Magoc (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) chipping in nine points after swimming a time of 19:56.92, placing 17th in the field.

In the 200 backstroke, Molly Hanlon (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) took 15th place overall in a time of 2:19.52, a career-high by the junior.

Allegheny scored three swimmers in the “B” heat of the finals, and were led by freshman Ashley Whitehead (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area), who placed 11th in a time of 54.81. Megan Knox (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Carolyn Nairn (Denver, Colo./Brownell-Talbot, Neb.) placed 14th and 16th, touching the wall in times of 55.37 and 56.16, respectively.

After a near NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke during the preliminaries, junior Erin Ham (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area) came even closer, swimming a time of 2:28.30, 1.19 seconds from the standard, placing fifth in the field. Rachelle Barrett (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and Alynn Maginness (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) each swam in the “B” section of the finals, placing tenth and 16th in the field with times of 2:35.87 and 2:49.45, respectively. Magoc, competing in the “C” section of the finals, added two points to the Gator cause with a time of 2:47.32.

The hopeful strong finish in the 100 butterfly came into fruition, as the team scored five swimmers in the “B” heat. Leading the way for the charge was Meg Hiestand (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights), who placed 10th overall in a time of 2:13.08, with Katie Scherry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) taking 12th in 2:17.09. Rachel Dingman (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), Alycia Conway (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and Megan McGuire (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) placed 14th, 15th and 16th, touching the wall in times of 2:20.61, 2:20.85 and 2:21.38, respectively.

The 400 free relay quartet of Whitehead, Scherry, Knox and Nairn earned All-NCAC honors by taking third place, winning by nearly a second and a half with a time of 3:38.15.

Senior diver Glenna Kramer (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny), in her final league championships, picked up a second place finish on the one-meter board to match the finish she had on the high board. She scored 337.35 points, 28.7 points behind individual champion Samantha Salas of Denison. First-year Gator Bridget Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) took 11th overall with 252.50 points, 14.45 points away from eighth place.

Ashton Kinney (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) picked up a 12th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle, swimming the long distance event in a time of 17:22.08, a new career-high, with Beau Whiteman (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) finishing close behind in a time of 17:28.14, good for 14th place, while setting a career-high by nearly 14 seconds. Evan Lewis (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) picked up the final scoring points in the field with a 24th place finish in a time of 18:52.27.

Allegheny’s only men’s backstroke swimmer in the finals, Cory Monroy (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos), placed 22nd overall in a time of 2:06.76. earning three points for the Gators, with the Terriers closing the gap between the two teams to 67. Ryan Lawrence (Union City, Pa./Union City) took 14th in a time of 48.21, with his senior classmate Rob Schreiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) placing 19th overall, touching the wall in a time of 49.05.

Sophomore Josh Sesek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) picked up the top individual finish of the day for the Gators, finishing eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.92. His classmates, Alex Smith (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) and Patrick Juber (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) helped add eight points to the Gator tally by placing 18th and 24th with times of 2:23.24 and 2:26.96, respectively.

The Gators followed the breaststroke by placing three in the butterfly, with Colin Gundling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), Schreiner and Lewis placing 20th, 21st and 22nd in times of 2:04.57, 2:06.82 and 2:15.16, respectively.

Allegheny ended the meet by placing sixth in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Lawrence, Gundling, Monroy and Schreiner swam to a time of 3:14.47
